Program length ranges from 1 to 6 years depending on the occupation. The registered designation matters: it is what makes the credential portable and what unlocks federal funding streams.

How it works

The structure of a registered apprenticeship follows a predictable sequence, even across wildly different trades.

  1. Sponsor registration — An employer, union, or industry association registers the program with the DOL or a state agency, establishing occupation standards, wage progression, and the ratio of apprentices to journey-level workers.

  2. Apprentice enrollment — A worker signs a formal apprenticeship agreement. This is a legal document that specifies wage rates at each step, the duration of training, and the technical instruction requirements.

  3. Concurrent work and instruction — The apprentice works full-time (or close to it) while completing required hours of related technical instruction, which may be delivered in-person at a community college, through an employer training center, or via online training programs.
